The owners of the West Taghkanic Diner, just off the Taconic State Parkway at Route 82, have taken great care of one of the region's best examples of roadside-iana. According to their web site, the building was manufactured by Mountain View Diners of Singac, NJ in 1953. It is one of three adjacent diners built by Bert Coons, including the Martindale Chief (with its very similar sign) and a slightly later one further north. Coons also ran the Village Diner in Red Hook. According to Glenn Wells' great history of these buildings, Coons operated them until 1970, and passed away two years later. Later sold to other owners, they remain "among the best preserved vintage diners you will find anywhere." Buon Appetit!
